Harrow’s extensive shopping area is often peoples’ main focus of the borough. Central Harrow provides a lot of employment for its residents, and therefore is a busy and dynamic place to work and live. There is a very diverse housing stock, with plenty of affordable houses and flats within walking distance of the town centre. The choice of primary schools includes Marlborough Hill and Roxeth. Secondary education is provided by the popular Harrow High and Whitmore High schools.

Central Harrow is the transport hub of the borough. Harrow on the Hill is a main junction station. Here the Uxbridge, Watford and Amersham branches of the Metropolitan Line meet and continue to Baker Street and the City. Additionally the station has National Rail services stopping here, provided by Chiltern Railways, and offers commuting to Marylebone and out to Amersham and Birmingham. Almost all the borough’s bus routes pass through Harrow Bus Station which is annexed to the train station. Notably the 140 bus route takes passengers from here to London Heathrow Airport.

Central Harrow boasts two very good shopping malls with St Ann’s and St George's. The Vue Cinema is a multi-screen venue located in St George's, which also caters well for pre-film dining. Harrow is home to many well-known retail chains, including a large Debenhams department store. All major banks are situated in the town centre, as well as the main post office. Harrow has a popular nightlife, with a variety of restaurants, coffee shops and pubs and bars to choose from. Close to the large Tesco is the Safari Cinema. It attracts people from all over North West London with its selection of Asian and Bollywood films.

There is a good choice of parks and open spaces within a short walk from the centre. Lowlands open space is a pleasant place for office workers to sit and eat lunch. Harrow Recreation Ground has coveted Green Flag status - a national award recognising its cleanliness and environmental endeavours. It provides tennis and cricket facilities, as well as a play area for younger children.
